Some of you may recall that I posted earlier about living with chronic pain and the ways in which it can circumscribe your life, despite the accommodations you make. After exhausting every available conservative treatment—PT, aqua and massage therapy, spinal injections, a chiropractor, acupuncture, and a minimally invasive endoscopic foraminotomy—I had a multi-level spinal fusion about three months ago.

View from my hospital room

It was a harrowing surgery—I don’t do well with anesthesia or pain pills, and i needed both. I ended up staying in the hospital for 12 days. Rehab has been tough. During my first walk with the physical therapist, I used a walker to go from my driveway to my neighbor’s; it was exhausting!
This week I was able to put my socks on and tie my own shoes. That little accomplishment may not seem like a big deal, but trust me, it really was.
I am, by nature, a person who likes to get things done. Being patient has been difficult—it takes anywhere from six months to a year for the muscles, bones, and nerves in the back to knit together properly.
At three months, I go to the gym, swim in the pool, ride my bike, and walk. I can do this all without sciatica —a miraculous gift.
I just wanted to share. I am so grateful.
Thanks for tuning in.
