Some of us got up early to see the sunrise in Yellowstone. I was chasing the light.

In 1872, the US Geological Service sent the Hayden Expedition to Yellowstone to map the area, collect information about the flora and fauna, mineral deposits, etc. Thomas Moran was one of 3 artists and photographers who accompanied the expedition. His painting, The Falls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, was influential in convincing the American public and Congress to support the creation of the National parks.

Upon viewing the falls for the first time he stated that the beauty he saw around him was “beyond human art.” I believe the beauty is also beyond the limits of speech. Since words fail me, I will let the photos speak for themselves.
