One of the down sides of this grant is being far from home when a special and sometimes not so-special occasion occurs. Recently my daughter Kate had a horrific cold: double-ear infection, bronchitis, fever, the whole nine yards. I know that if I had been there, I would have been making her chicken soup and hot toddies. I know that she could have used some of that personal TLC….somehow sending instant messages or even talking on Skype is a poor substitute for the real thing. I am reminded, though, that the technology has made a huge difference. Years ago, when I was a student in Switzerland, I spoke to my parents on the phone 2, maybe 3 times, during the entire year. It was just too prohibitively expensive to call more often. We relied on letters and an occasional telegram to keep in touch–and they took a long time. This blog, in and of itself, is one way for me to stay in touch with my loved ones. So, when my brother-in-law, Andy, had surgery a few weeks ago, we were able to keep in touch with Ann and Andy–we were delighted to hear that he did really well and that his convalescence is progressing better than they had hoped.
Today is my sister Cathy’s birthday…it’s a special day for her and we are not able to be with her to celebrate this milestone. So this is directly to you, Katikam. We wish we could be with you. Many happy returns, love you, and will celebrate upon our return.
Love,
Marcsi and Bernie

I loved this piece at the ICS in Kecskemet….it shows a great sense of humor and reminded me of the Muranyi women’s feet!
