I don’t miss the car. We have learned to use trams, metro & buses in 3 cities now. And we walk. This morning we walked to the Farmer’s Market. We have our folding microfiber totes (thanks again, Irene) and it was easy to carry our groceries home. This is commonplace for Europeans. So on the one hand, public transportation reduces gas house emissions. On the other hand, we can’t regulate the heat in our apartment. It gets unbearably hot. I am a middle-aged woman (if you know what I mean) and we, as well as our neighbors, have the windows open even when the temperatures outside are really cold. It’s an incredible waste, but there’s not much we can do about it.
After we left the market, we strolled through the plaza in front of the Great Church. I know that it is very cold in New England and that snow still covers the ground. But today in Debrecen the weather is balmy and springlike. I watch these little kids zip across the plaza in front of the Great Church on their little trikes. They come tearing around the bend of the path and try to startle the pigeons–I wasn’t a good enough photographer and couldn’t capture it.
Anyway, tomorrow I meet the students. Wish me luck!
